Description
Original Items. A handsome matched pair of official Socialist-era commemorative pieces marking the 60th anniversary of the Mongolian People's Army, two distinct formats issued, each representing a different tier of the commemorative program. The first and larger piece is struck at a Soviet mint, a large gilt sunburst disc carrying a bold MPA five-pointed red enamel star at center, the Soyombo national symbol rendered in gold within the star's face, and the numeral 60 at the base, suspended from a tricolor enamel bar mount in red and blue reflecting the colors of the Mongolian national flag. The second piece is a star-form badge produced at the Ulaanbaatar mint, carrying MPA star in red enamel and gilt palette, the face bearing the inscription identifying the Mongolian People's Army in raised gold lettering beneath the Soyombo, suspended from a rectangular gilt bar mount with matching tricolor enamel panels. Both reverses carry standard pin-back bar fittings consistent with Mongolian People's Republic commemorative production of the period.
Socialist-era Mongolian military commemorative medals and badges are produced in far smaller quantities than their Soviet counterparts and being significantly harder to source in the West. A matched pair in this condition, two complementary formats from the anniversary issue, both displaying cleanly, represents the kind of cohesive holding that anchors a serious collection of the Mongolian People's Army.
