At its heart stands Otgontenger, the sacred peak of the Khangai range and one of the most spiritually venerated mountains in all of Mongolia, worshipped for centuries as a living deity in both shamanist and Buddhist tradition. It is this landscape, and the remarkable people it has shaped, that this official 90th anniversary medal sets out to honor. The medal takes a distinctive four-lobed cross form in rich gilt, the central disc carrying a beautifully rendered scene of Otgontenger rising from the steppe and upper snow in white enamel, framed by laurel branches at the base. It suspends from a bold bar mount in red and dark blue enamel with the provincial name ZAVKHAN in raised gilt lettering and the numeral 90 in a gilt roundel at the crown, the colors of the Mongolian national flag.
