Description
Original Item – Only One Available. An exceptionally low-numbered example of the Mikhail Lermontov Medal issued by the Russian Lermontov Committee, accompanied by its original award certificate and burgundy presentation cover. The certificate associates this issue with the 190th anniversary of Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov’s birth and states that the medal recognized a recipient’s personal contribution to Russia’s multinational culture and the strengthening of Russian statehood. This is a committee-issued literary and cultural distinction rather than a state decoration of the Russian Federation, awarded within Russian academic, literary, educational, and cultural circles; documented recipients include prominent writers, scholars, and cultural figures.
The silvered medal presents a finely modeled portrait of Lermontov in military uniform, with the raised inscription “М. Лермонтов” beneath. It is suspended from a striking yellow-and-black ribbon whose severe palette gives the award an unmistakably formal appearance. The reverse carries a crowned heraldic shield surrounded by elaborate foliage and the line “Yet impartial tradition will preserve your glorious deed” taken from Lermontov’s poem “Great Man! Here There Is No Reward…” Beneath the arms appears the medal’s most important collector feature: the remarkably low serial number No. 007.
The accompanying certificate features the Russian Lermontov Committee’s seal and authorizing signature, while the recipient and award-entry fields remain uncompleted. Condition is very good overall, with strong portrait detail, clear reverse inscriptions, attractive original surfaces, and limited age-related handling. The ribbon shows visible wear and localized fraying on the reverse, accurately documented in the photographs, while the suspension and pin assembly remain complete. The combination of the medal, original paperwork, distinctive bicentenary certificate, and three-digit serial 007 makes this an unusually desirable grouping for a specialist collection of Russian cultural awards, literary commemoratives, or Lermontov-related material.
