Description
Original Item – Only One Available. An exceptional and seldom-encountered official commemorative from one of Russia's most secretive institutions. This large-format table medal was struck at the Moscow Mint in 2008 to mark the 70th anniversary of the Academy of Foreign Intelligence, the elite training academy of the SVR, Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service and direct successor to the KGB's First Chief Directorate. The obverse bears the raised legends Foreign Intelligence Service and Academy of Foreign Intelligence surrounding a superb multi-piece applied insignia: a silvered sunburst star overlaid with a gilt laurel wreath, Russian tricolor enamel ribbons, a maroon enamel ring carrying the Academy's motto Fatherland, Valor, Honor, a blue enamel globe centered with "70," an open book marked "AVR," and a gilt scroll dated 1938–2008.
The reverse is where this medal speaks directly to intelligence historians, it lists the Academy's complete institutional lineage, a chronology rarely acknowledged in official Russian sources: 1938 – ШОН (the NKVD's School of Special Purpose), 1943 – РАШ, 1948 – ВРШ (Higher Intelligence School), 1953 – ШКОЛА 101 (the famed School No. 101), 1968 – КИ (the Red Banner Institute, where Vladimir Putin himself trained), and 1994 – АВР. Beneath sits the date 2008 within laurel sprays and the Moscow Mint mark. The medal displays a warm matte bronze patina with brilliant contrast against the polished silvered and gilt appliqué, and the multicolor enamels remain glossy.
These medals were never sold publicly, they were produced in a small quantity for presentation to Academy staff, graduates, and honored guests of the anniversary celebrations, making surviving examples genuinely scarce on the collector's market. This example comes complete in its velvet presentation case. Condition is excellent, with only the faintest handling evidence consistent with careful storage. A museum-worthy centerpiece for any collection of Soviet and Russian state security, KGB/SVR, or Cold War intelligence memorabilia, the kind of insider-issued piece that rarely surfaces twice.
