Description
Original Item – Only One Available. A rare 45th anniversary badge of Directorate “R” of Russian foreign intelligence, issued in 2020 to mark a departmental lineage established within the KGB’s First Chief Directorate in 1975. Unlike the geographic departments that ran intelligence work against particular countries and regions, Directorate R was responsible for operational planning and analysis, examining foreign intelligence operations at the central level and assessing their organization and results. It occupied a particularly interesting position inside the First Chief Directorate: rather than being identified with one country, technical discipline, or intelligence station, its work reached across overseas operations and the planning structure behind them. The Directorate R tradition continued into the post-Soviet foreign-intelligence system, making this anniversary badge a direct link between the organizational machinery of the KGB’s PGU and the modern Russian SVR.
The badge is an exceptionally substantial shield-and-sword construction in silvered metal with gilt and multicolor enamel details. At center, a large radiating silver star carries a blue globe overlaid with the gilt Cyrillic “Р”, unmistakably identifying Directorate R, while Russian tri-color white, blue and red enamel fields beneath the star frame the raised “45” anniversary numeral. The entire composition is enclosed within a riveted defensive shield and surmounted by the gilt hilt of a sword, combining the traditional shield-and-sword language of Russian security-service insignia with the globe and directorate letter of foreign intelligence. The reverse uses a screwpost fastening and retains its original gilt screw plate clearly marked Spetsznak, the specialist Moscow producer associated with Russian departmental and security-service insignia. The enamel remains deep and glossy, the silvered relief exceptionally sharp, and the contrasting gilt details give the badge considerably more presence than a conventional anniversary pin.
Directorate-level SVR anniversary insignia belong to one of the more specialized areas of modern Russian intelligence collecting. They commemorate individual internal components rather than the Foreign Intelligence Service as a whole, and their intended audience was consequently far narrower than that of general SVR jubilee material. The 45th anniversary issue is especially appealing alongside the later 50th anniversary Directorate R badge, documenting the same highly specialized operational-planning lineage at two successive milestones. With its Spetsznak maker mark, heavy screwback construction, distinctive Directorate “R” emblem and anniversary context, this is a particularly strong piece for an advanced collection of SVR, KGB-PGU lineage, Russian intelligence or modern security-service insignia.
