A rare 50th anniversary badge of Directorate “R” of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), issued to mark a departmental lineage established in 1975 within the KGB’s First Chief Directorate. Directorate “R” was created for operational planning and analysis, occupying a central position quite different from the geographic desks and specialist technical directorates of Soviet foreign intelligence. Its work encompassed integrated operational planning, analysis of recruitment activity and completed operations, organizational control, and coordination of intelligence planning across the First Chief Directorate; within the modern SVR, Directorate “R” continues the operational-planning and evaluation function, assessing foreign intelligence operations conducted abroad. The 50th anniversary therefore marks half a century of one of the less visible but structurally important elements behind Soviet and Russian foreign-intelligence operations.

The badge is an imposing multi-piece silvered, gilt and enamel shield-and-sword construction. A deep cobalt-blue enamel field supports a large radiating silver star centered by a blue globe in gilt gridwork, while the oversized gilt Cyrillic “Р” identifies the directorate and the raised “50” records its half-century anniversary. A sculpted Russian tricolor ribbon rises around the lower and side portions of the shield, while the gilt dagger hilt above and pointed blade below preserve the traditional sword-and-shield visual language of Russian security-service insignia. The reverse reveals the substantial layered construction and screwpost fastening, complete with its original gilt screw plate clearly marked Spetsznak, together with the maker’s control mark on the badge body. The enamel is exceptionally deep and glossy, the silvered relief remains crisp, and the polished gilt overlays give the piece the finish expected of a high-grade departmental presentation badge.

Directorate-specific SVR jubilee insignia form a much narrower field than general Foreign Intelligence Service anniversary material, since they commemorate an individual internal component rather than the service as a whole. This 50th anniversary issue was produced in a limited departmental run, and its combination of the Directorate “R” emblem, historical context, heavy multi-piece manufacture and clearly marked Spetsznak fittings makes it a particularly strong modern intelligence collectible.
