Description

Original Item – Only One Available. A rare official 3rd Class Medal “For Distinction in Military Service” of the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation (SVR), awarded for ten calendar years of impeccable service in Russian foreign intelligence. Instituted by order of the Director of the SVR on 14 November 1995, the decoration was among the early departmental awards created as the newly independent Russian foreign-intelligence service established its own post-Soviet system of recognition. It continued the long-service tradition formerly represented by the Soviet-era three-class “For Irreproachable Service” medal, which had been discontinued in 1992. The SVR award likewise formed a strict three-grade progression: 3rd Class at 10 years, 2nd Class at 15 years, and 1st Class at 20 years, making this the first formal milestone in the service career of an eligible foreign-intelligence officer rather than a commemorative or anniversary decoration.

The medal is a brass issue, its obverse built around a shield bearing the Roman numeral III, identifying the 3rd Class, superimposed over crossed swords, spread wings and an anchor, an established Russian military-service composition representing the different branches of armed service. The lower perimeter carries the title “For Distinction in Military Service,” while the reverse leaves no ambiguity as to its institutional origin, bearing the full four-line designation Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation, framed below by laurel branches. At the base of the reverse is the Moscow Mint hallmark, identifying this example as an official Moscow Mint production. The original pentagonal suspension retains the prescribed red ribbon with narrow yellow edging and three central green stripes, the ribbon pattern reserved specifically for the 3rd Class; the higher grades use two and one green stripes respectively.

What gives this medal particular interest is the combination of a clearly defined 10-year service qualification, direct SVR attribution and official mint manufacture. It was not created for public sale or general commemorative distribution, but as part of the internal decorations system of Russia’s foreign-intelligence service, an institution whose personnel and service careers are by nature far less visible than those of conventional military formations. Complete Moscow Mint examples retaining the correct suspension and ribbon therefore occupy a very different collecting category from modern intelligence-themed badges and unofficial commemoratives. For an advanced collection of SVR, KGB-successor, Russian intelligence or post-Soviet state-security awards, this is a particularly strong representative piece from the formative first decade of the modern Foreign Intelligence Service.
