Description

Original Item – Only One Available. A rare original Type 2 commemorative badge marking the 100th anniversary of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), produced for the historic centenary of Russian foreign intelligence in 2020. The service traces its institutional origins to December 20, 1920, when Felix Dzerzhinsky established the Foreign Department of the Soviet Cheka, creating a dedicated organization for intelligence operations beyond Soviet borders. Its successors included the foreign intelligence departments of the OGPU and NKVD and, most prominently, the First Chief Directorate of the KGB, whose responsibilities passed to the independent Russian Foreign Intelligence Service following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The centenary honored a century of intelligence officers, operational personnel, and veterans who served through successive generations of the country's foreign intelligence establishment. This example is the distinctive Type 2 variant by the Moscow manufacturer Orel & Co, rather than the more familiar Type 1 produced by the Military Heraldic Company (VGK), representing a less frequently encountered version of the anniversary insignia.

The badge is an elaborate multi-piece construction combining silver and gold-toned relief, a substantial architectural centerpiece, and finely detailed departmental heraldry. Its upper section displays the Russian double-headed eagle, crowned in the traditional imperial style and bearing the SVR's distinctive emblem: a radiant five-pointed star with a blue globe at its center, enclosed within a circular shield. Beneath the eagle rises the architectural complex of the SVR headquarters in Moscow's Yasenevo district, rendered in detailed silver-toned relief with its recognizable modernist entrance structure and adjoining facades. The composition is enclosed by an ornate gilt wreath of oak and laurel foliage, representing military distinction, achievement, and institutional continuity. At the base, a prominent red-enamel cartouche bears the raised anniversary numeral "100" in gilt lettering. The reverse features a broad circular mounting plate with a central threaded screwpost, while the layered construction gives the obverse pronounced depth and dimension. The badge retains its detailed relief and rich contrasting finishes, with minor surface wear and natural toning visible in the photographs.

The Type 2 variation occupies a distinctive position within the SVR's centenary commemorative insignia, particularly for collectors seeking the different manufacturing executions associated with the historic anniversary. Compared with the more commonly encountered VGK-produced Type 1, the Orel & Co. version is considerably less frequently offered on the collectors' market, making it an appealing specialist variant rather than simply another example of the same jubilee badge. Its depiction of the SVR headquarters is especially significant, connecting the centenary directly to the institution's modern operational establishment while the double-headed eagle and globe-centered emblem preserve the service's official heraldic identity. A distinctive original anniversary piece for advanced collections of Russian foreign intelligence, KGB successor organizations, and modern intelligence-service decorations.
