Description
Original Item – Only One Available. A rare original 70th Anniversary Badge of the External Counterintelligence Directorate of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), commemorating seven decades of one of the most specialized operational branches of Soviet and Russian foreign intelligence. Its responsibilities expanded considerably during the Cold War, culminating in the establishment of the KGB First Chief Directorate's Second Service in 1963 and its reorganization into the renowned Directorate K in 1971. Unlike domestic counterintelligence, this specialized branch operated abroad, identifying hostile intelligence activities, protecting Soviet diplomatic and intelligence personnel, safeguarding overseas intelligence networks, and penetrating foreign security services. These responsibilities continued under the SVR following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. This departmental jubilee distinction commemorates the service of foreign counterintelligence officers, operational specialists, and honored veterans whose careers contributed to protecting Russian intelligence operations beyond the country's borders.
The badge features an elaborate multi-layered shield-shaped composition with richly contrasting gilt, silver toned, and multicolored enamel details. A prominent gold-toned sword rises from the upper section, framed by a substantial heraldic shield. At its center, a separately applied circular medallion displays a blue-enamel globe beneath the anniversary numeral "70," surrounded by a gilt ring bearing the SVR's traditional motto, "Fatherland, Valor, Honor." The central composition is further distinguished by the colors of the Russian national tricolor, represented in white, blue, and red enamel. The sweeping deep blue-enamel ribbon carry the inscription "External Counterintelligence" in raised gilt lettering, directly identifying the directorate rather than the Foreign Intelligence Service as a whole. The layered metalwork, projecting central medallion, and finely detailed relief give the badge substantial depth and an imposing departmental appearance. The reverse has a plain silver-toned finish with two original pin-and-clutch fastenings. Condition is excellent, with vivid enamel, well-preserved gilt surfaces, and minor handling marks visible in the photographs.
External counterintelligence insignia occupy a particularly specialized position within Russian intelligence collecting, representing a professional branch whose operational history extends from the Soviet NKVD through the KGB's Directorate K to the modern SVR. Its officers operated within the foreign intelligence establishment itself, making their departmental insignia distinct from the more familiar decorations of the FSB and other domestic security organizations. The 70th Anniversary Badge is especially significant for its direct connection to the institutional traditions of overseas counterintelligence, while its substantial multi-piece construction and specific departmental inscription distinguish it from general SVR commemorative badges. A rarely encountered original anniversary issue for advanced collections of Soviet and Russian intelligence, KGB First Chief Directorate insignia, and specialized SVR departmental decorations.
