The badge takes the most storied form in Russian security-service heraldry: the shield and downturned sword of the Chekist tradition, the design reserved for the state security organs and their successors since the 1920s. On the shield's textured field, the SVR silvered star carries the directorate's emblem, a blue-enameled globe with meridian lines behind a gold satellite communications dish, the symbolism of worldwide secure links rendered in miniature, flanked by Russian tricolor ribbons above the dark blue banner lettered "УСС," with a bold red-enameled "70" below. Construction is multipiece and executed to a high standard. The reverse carries the original double clutch-post fitting, both clutches present.
