Russian SVR Foreign Intelligence Special Forces Unit “Zaslon” 15th Anniversary Badge – Variation 2, Rare Original Issue

Original Item – Only One Available. Rare original Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) special-purpose unit “Zaslon” badge, belonging to the later Variation 2 of the 15th-anniversary commemorative series associated with one of the most restricted special-purpose formations of the Russian intelligence community. Zaslon operates within the sphere of the SVR’s special-purpose capabilities and is publicly associated with the protection and security of Russian intelligence personnel, sensitive facilities and diplomatic missions abroad, including operations in particularly high-risk environments. Because of the unit’s highly restricted character, authentic departmental insignia connected with Zaslon is considerably less frequently encountered.

This example represents the later Variation 2 issue of the Zaslon 15th Anniversary badge. It retains essentially the same design and overall composition as the earlier anniversary version, but was manufactured in a different material, making it a distinct production variation. The principal differences are therefore in manufacture and material rather than in the insignia’s visual concept or commemorative purpose. This later version appears to have been issued subsequently to additional Zaslon personnel while preserving the established 15th-anniversary design.

The badge is exceptionally elaborate, built on the traditional shield-and-sword security-service form with a silver-toned textured shield, central dark-blue enameled globe and prominent gilded “Z”, the unmistakable emblematic reference to Zaslon. A radiant gold starburst, green enameled laurel branches and Russian tricolor ribbon surround the centerpiece, while the lower red scroll bears “ANTITERROR.” The reverse retains the substantial screw-post mounting characteristic of Russian departmental badges of this type. Its layered construction, extensive enamel work and specialized Zaslon symbolism make it a particularly desirable piece for an advanced collection of SVR, Russian intelligence, special-purpose and counter-terrorism insignia.
