Description
Original Item – Only One Available. An extremely rare commemorative badge of "Zaslon", the special operations unit of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service and arguably the most secretive spetsnaz formation in the entire Russian security apparatus. Formed in 1993, the Zaslon answers directly to the director of the SVR, and its existence has never been officially acknowledged. The SVR's director publicly denied having any such unit in 2002, even as its operators were reportedly deploying to Baghdad, protecting Russian embassies in war zones, and executing emergency evacuations of diplomatic personnel from collapsing capitals. Its men appear in no parades and its insignia in no regulations; what little reaches the collector market comes from the small community of serving and former operators, which is why Zaslon items are the white whale of modern Russian intelligence collecting.
The badge is built on the Chekist shield-and-sword in a particularly fine multipiece execution: a gilt sword behind a shield of translucent royal-blue sunburst enamel, "Zaslon" in bold silvered relief across the top, and the full SVR eagle with the service's star-and-globe emblem on its breast, applied at center. Below, a silvered scroll records the unit's structural lineage within the service: ВКР – ЦСН – ЦСБ (foreign counterintelligence, the Special Purpose Center, the Center of Security, the successive homes of Zaslon across three decades). Across the sword's blade, the Roman numeral XXX marks thirty years since the 1993 founding. The reverse carries the original screw-post fitting with maker-marked retaining plate.
Consider what this badge represents: a unit whose existence was officially denied for decades, marking its own thirtieth year in a small internal issue never meant to be seen outside the service. SVR material is the scarcest of all modern Russian intelligence insignia; Zaslon material is the scarcest within the SVR; and anniversary pieces of this quality essentially do not circulate. For the collector of intelligence and special operations material, this is a genuine capstone acquisition.
