Description

Original Item – Only One Available. Among the rarest and most specialized badges to emerge from the Russian intelligence community, this is a badge of the SVR Russia Internal Security Department, established in 1968 and bearing that founding date prominently on the obverse, a detail that immediately identifies this as a commemorative issue marking the unit's origins within the Soviet-era foreign intelligence structure. Critically, the badge also carries the letter "N" identifying its connection to the Nelegaly, the Illegals directorate, the most secretive and elite branch within Russian foreign intelligence, responsible for deep cover officers operating abroad under entirely false identities for years or decades at a time. The badge takes the classic Russian security service shield-and-sword form in silver-tone metal with deep blue enamel ground, carrying the SVR star emblem with white enamel at center, flanked by scroll banners bearing the motto "Without the Right to Glory, for the Glory of the State", the defining creed of the SVR Illegals program. The Russian tricolor stripe runs along the lower shield panel, and the surrounding frame carries the full inscription identifying the Internal Security function.

The founding of the Internal Security Department in 1968 placed it at the heart of one of the most active and consequential periods in Soviet foreign intelligence history, when Illegal officers were operating across Western Europe, North America, and beyond under deep cover identities that took years to build and maintain. The department's role was to protect the integrity of those operations from within, counterintelligence directed inward at the intelligence service itself, one of the most sensitive and demanding functions imaginable.

Badges attributable to the SVR Illegals directorate in any form are essentially absent from the collector market, and a piece combining the Nelegaly identification, the Internal Security Department founding date of 1968, and the full motto intact represents a convergence of rarity and historical significance that the serious collector of Russian foreign intelligence insignia will immediately recognize. The enamel is vivid and undamaged, the relief work sharp throughout, and the reverse hardware fully intact.
